One thing I think a lot of people will get wrong here is whether or not we should hear from Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of a drunken sexual assault from their high school days.
Several people have said she should be heard, and I agree. A lot of Trump supporters and other Republicans, however, are going to dismiss her outright and try to argue that it’s either too late or that there is not enough evidence to justify giving this accusation airtime.
But, that’s not the point.
Victims – alleged or proven – should be given time to air their stories. To not let all voices be heard tells future victims that talking about their assault isn’t worth their time, that no one would listen or care, and make it easier for the truly evil to continue their assault on victims.
But, giving the accusation airtime, allowing her to speak to the Senate Judiciary Committee, does not mean that Republicans are admitting Kavanaugh is guilty, either. In our country exists this extraordinary idea that we are innocent until proven guilty.
Ford should be heard. That does not mean that the confirmation should be delayed. There is not enough evidence to convince me that it should be delayed. One accusation of a drunken indiscretion in high school, presented at the last minute after it was sat on for months, weighed against an enormous number of character witnesses isn’t enough to justify a delay – especially when there is no evidence that it may have been anything other than a one-time indiscretion (if it had happened).
If Kavanaugh did do it, then shame on him, but it very clearly sounds like a mistake rather than a sign that he is some horrible sexual predator.
Let Ford speak, but you’re not going to change my mind based on a decades-old story that Democrats themselves sat on for two months.
