“Keep on Truckin'”: Texas WWII Veteran Posts Important Birthday Wish, and Thousands Respond

Screen grab of Joe Cuba via KFDX.

A 99-year-old World War II veteran who resides in Wichita Falls, Texas has a special request for his upcoming birthday.

WFMY reports:

When you’re lucky enough to turn 100 and you served your country during WWII, you could ask and probably should receive just about anything.

That’s not the case for Joe Cuba who turns 100 in March. Mr. Cuba only wants 100 of the same thing—birthday cards.

He has put out a plea on social media, with help of staff at Brookdale Midwestern in Wichita Falls, Texas, for 100 birthday cards by his March 2 birthday.

Mr. Cuba has become somewhat of a celebrity since the February 19 post on Facebook by Stephanie Veitenheimer who is a Sales Manager at the senior living facility (Brooksdale Midwestern).

Mr. Cuba has received tons of birthday cards and well wishes – well over a 10,000(!!), and has gotten some pretty neat sketches, too.

Joe continues to be amazed with everyone's generosity. Keep the cards coming as we celebrate a 100 years with GI Joe…… Please like our page so you can keep up with GI Joe's birthday wish.

News station KFDX did a nice write-up on Mr. Cuba and gave some background on his life story:

Cuba married in 1943 before enlisting in the Army Air Corps to defend this nation and then came home to Texoma.

Throughout his life, Cuba said he has stuck to these wise words:

“Just keep on trucking. When you like to do something, do it,” Cuba said. “If you don’t, don’t. but I’ll say if you’re interested in something, and have a chance to presume then life will get a hold of it and stay with it. Stay with something and you’ll get ahead. You’ll be okay.”

Cuba said he enjoys drinking coffee with his fellow veteran buddies at Brookdale and said he’s thankful for his health more than anything.

Here’s their video report:

To make things even better, Chick-fil-A has offered to cater lunch at the senior living center where Joe resides. Awesome!

Just giving an up date on GI Joe he has had several interviews with local news stations KFDX & KAUZ Wichita Falls, FOX…
