Sgt. Hidilyn Diaz made history on Monday! The 30-year-old weightlifter brought pride to her home country when she bagged the first-ever Olympic gold medal for the Philippines. She also tied a world record in the process.
She ended the Philippines 97-year-wait for the gold medal in Olympics. She defeated China’s Liao Qiuyun, who holds the world record before.
But there’s more to this story.
An old social media post is making rounds today. Hidilyn asked for financial help to help pay for her way to the Olympics. She couldn’t afford training and travel by herself. She asked her followers “if it’s okay” to ask for donations from private companies.
Then she went and won gold.
