Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled the country Sunday morning. The president in exile insisted it was to “prevent more bloodshed” — especially his own.
Thousands of Afghans are trapped inside the country as the Taliban took control of Kabul on Sunday.
Ashraf left the country without saying where he was going. He was named one of the “World’s Top 100 Global Thinkers” by Foreign Policy magazine in 2010.
Afghanistan’s new de facto leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar has issued a congratulatory message to his fellow Taliban on the declaration of the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.”
Later on Sunday Ashraf Ghani released a statement after fleeing the country.
He ended his statement with this jewel, “Long live Afghanistan!”
