Pfizer Says it can Tweak Current COVID Vaccine in 100 Days if Necessary in Response to Omicron Variant

Pfizer said on Friday that it could produce an improved version of its vaccine within 100 days if the new  ‘Omicron’ variant is resistant to the current vaccine.

Pfizer told FOX Business in an email that they are “remaining vigilant” and “constantly conducting surveillance efforts focused on monitoring for emerging variants that potentially escape protection from our vaccine.”

Here’s an excerpt from the email sent to FOX Business:

“As always, we will continue to follow the science as we examine the best approaches to protecting people against COVID-19. In the event that vaccine-escape variant emerges, Pfizer and BioNTech expect to be able to develop and produce a tailor-made vaccine against that variant in approximately 100 days, subject to regulatory approval.”

The chairwoman of the South African Medical Association who first raised the alarm of the new COVID variant, previously reported that the new variant known as the ‘Omicron’ causes “unusual but mild symptoms” and says there’s nothing to worry about. Dr. Angelique Coetzee was on with the BBC on Sunday.
