Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez appeared on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday and really did it up right.
In the game of winceworthiness, the socialist stepped up to the plate, batted the dirt off her cleats, squinted into the cheap seats, pointed, and took an ultra-svelte stance with her elbow up and her Louisville slugger waaaaay back. Seconds later, the wood-crack of a lifetime echoed through the park as she watched the ball disappear into the atmosphere.
As she nodded and smiled, host Jake Tapper asked a very good — and basic — question:
“Your platform has called for various new programs, including Medicare for All, housing as a federal right, a federal jobs guarantee, tuition-free public college, canceling all student load debt. According to non-partisan and left-leaning studies friendly to your cause — including the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, or the Tax Policy Center — the overall price tag is more than $40 trillion in the next decade.”
More smiling and nodding, as Tapper continued:
“You recently said in an interview that increasing taxes on the very wealthy, plus an increased corporate tax rate, would make $2 trillion over the next ten years. So where’s the other $38 trillion dollars going to come from?”
Verrrrrry good question, Jake. Very good.
Watching the clip, I had the same feeling I’d gotten while watching the first five seasons of the six-season-long Lost: “Wow. The craziest story in the world has been set up. The explanation of all this is gonna to be so amazing, it’s gonna blow my cotton-pickin’ mind. It would have to. Yes!”
Alexandria has promised us the world! Ready aaaaaand…season six:
“Well, one of the things that we need to realize when we look at something like Medicare for All…Medicare for All would save the American people a very large amount of money. And what we see as well is that these systems are not just pie-in-the-sky. Many of them are accomplished by every modern civilized democracy in the Western world. The United Kingdom has a form of single-payer healthcare. Canada, France, Germany. What we need to realize is that these investments are better and they are good for our future. These are generational investments. … They are not short-term bandaids, but they are really profound decisions about who we want to be as a nation and how we want to act, as the wealthiest nation in the history in the world.”
Oooookay… Well, the way we became the wealthiest nation in the history of the world is capitalism. You want to do away with it. Sooooo…
…
Why is Walt so special? What happened with the nuclear bomb in the 70’s? Why did only some people go back in time? What were the mirrors in Jacob’s watch tower? Why can Jacob leave the island, but the smoke monster can’t?
Halfway through season six, I still had hope. Therefore, I’m hangin’ with you, Alexandria. You’re still nodding and smiling, like you’re ready…
Jake queried:
“Right. I get that. But the price tag for everything that you laid out in your campaign is $40 trillion over the next ten years. I understand that Medicare for all would cost more to some wealthier people and to the government and to taxpayers, while also reducing individual health care expenditures. But I’m talking about the overall package. You say it’s not pie-in-the-sky, but $40 trillion is quite a bit of money, and the taxes that you talked about to pay for this — to pay for your agenda — only count for two. And again, we’re talking about left-leaning analysts.”
Right. Okay. Here comes the mind-blowing ending. The thing that’s gonna make watching the whooole show totally worth it. Alexandria stopped her nodding and smiling, and wrapped up the series:
“What we see is, for example, you know, a year ago, I was working downtown in a restaurant. I went around and I asked, ‘How many of you folks have health insurance?’ Not a single person did, because they would have to have paid $200 a month for a payment, for insurance that had an $8000 deductible. … [W]hat this is is a broader agenda. We do know — we acknowledge that — there are political realities.”
Right — there are realities…that’s true…
“They don’t always happen with just the wave of a wand.”
Correct; things don’t happen with the wave of a wand; okay. Sooooo…
“But we can work to make these things happen, and in fact, when you look at the economic activity that it spurs — for example, if you you look at my generation — Millennials — the amount of economic activity that we do not engage in — the fact that we delay purchasing homes, that we don’t participate in the economy in purchasing cars, et cetera, as fully as possible — is a cost. It is an externality, if you will, of unprecedented amounts of student loan debt.”
Sooooo…
That’s it?
That’s it.
That was it.
Six seasons.
Two long answers, and I’m still…Lost.
Jake gave up:
“So I’m assuming I’m not going to get an answer for the other $38 trillion, but we’ll have you back and maybe we can go over that.”
Why would they have her back?
She nodded and smiled, seemingly oblivious to the fact that she was seemingly oblivious.
This is what the Left does — it sets up people who are completely unqualified to talk about the things they’re trying to discuss. The Left tells them they’re brilliant and puts them in the spotlight, as gullible pawns. What ensues is hard to watch.
And yet, we all may be watching Ocasio-Cortez ascend to our national Congress. I believe she has good intentions; I believe she wants to do good. Unfortunately, as it stands, she’s $38 trillion short. And whatever explanation might solve the mystery doesn’t exist. Her magical-island promises meeting discernible reality are as a stick to a flint. And any hope for answers…is up in smoke monster.
